DOT PHYSICALS

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
(D.O.T) Physicals

Commercial vehicle drivers are mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to obtain a DOT medical card after completing a physical examination in order to safely operate a commercial vehicle. The physical exam must be completed by a Certified Medical Examiner who is listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry.

What will the exam consist of?
The exam will consist of a comprehensive evaluation of general physical and mental health, blood pressure, vision and hearing.

Do I need to bring anything with me?
Yes. You will need to bring a copy of your medical record (if this is your first exam with Community NP), any recent bloodwork results, glasses/contact lenses/hearing aids, and a complete list of all prescription and over the counter medicines you currently take.

How long is the DOT medical card valid?
A DOT medical card is valid for up to 24 months. However, in some cases, shorter time frames for medical clearance may be given if a condition warrants closer monitoring (Ex: uncontrolled blood pressure or diabetes).
